Preview: April 8-14, 2019

The new Spring Week delights us with memorable concert experiences and masterclasses, but also directly holds several deadlines for important competitions. As always, we summarized all dates in our weekly preview.

Concerts and master classes

In Budapest, the week begins with László Fassang's "Organ Expedition". Also on Monday, Nicholas Rimmer will give a recital with José Maria Blumenschein in the Historischer Gemeindesaal Bonn. On Wednesday, classical music fans can enjoy a concert by pianist Paul Rivinius with the Minguet Quartet in Mannheim. Joseph-Maurice Weder will give a duo recital with Heidi Schmid in Bogota on April 11. The two musicians bring pieces by Janacek, Dubugnon, Brahms, Moser and Beethoven to the stage. On Saturday, the pianist gives a master class for students in Caracas. The following day, another recital by the duo Weder-Schmid is going to take place there. Kateryna Titova is looking forward to a piano concert on Friday in Nuremberg. In Oslo, Marianna Shirinyan is going to give a chamber music concert this Tuesday. On Saturday, there will be a symphony concert in the Kongresshaus Garmisch-Partenkirchen with the Munich Symphony Orchestra under Michael Balke with the celebrated pianist. The concert is titled "Classical Russian". Katia Skanavi will be heading straight to Russia this week for a concert in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Hall with Chulpan Hamatova and Alexander Knyazev, also taking place on Saturday.

Nils Mönkemeyer's calendar offers numerous concerts this week. On April 9 and 10, the violist will give two quartet concerts with Alina Ibragimova, violin, Christian Poltera, violoncello, and William Youn, piano, in Hamburg and Gjovik (Norway). On Friday, a concert with William Youn in the Erwin Piscator House Marburg follows. On Saturdays, the sought-after musician will be a guest at the Heidelberger Frühling. Barbara Buntrock and the Amaryllis Quartet play in Lübeck and Hamburg on April 10 and 11. At the Konturen Festival Brühl, cellist Jens Peter Maintz gives a concert on Friday with works by Brahms and Tschaikowsky.

Aldo Baerten is part of the jury of the Netherlands Flute Competition on Wednesday. From April 14 on, the flutist will be touring South America with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. Johanna Dömötör and the Festival Strings Lucerne will open the Classic Easter Festival of the Swiss Chamber Music Circle in Andermatt on Saturday. Thorsten Johanns will travel to the Stift Musical Encounters on April 13 to give masterclasses and concerts in the following days.

On 10th and 11th of April Reinhard Goebel conducts two concerts with the Duisburg Philharmonic and works by Eberl, Clement and Beethoven. Daniel Raiskin will give a concert on April 12 with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in St. Petersburg. Here he conducts music by Dohnanyi, Liszt, Brahms and Kodaly. On Saturday, Hossein Pishkar conducts the Symphony Concert of the Stuttgart State Orchestra and alto Stine Marie Fischer. Works by Sciarrino, Romitelli and Beethoven will be played. On the same day, the premiere of the chamber opera "Clara" by Victoria Bond with the Karajan Academy Berlin under the direction of Michael Hasel takes place at the Theater Baden-Baden.

Soprano Sunhae Im will perform in Tel Aviv from April 10 to 14 with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. The singer is going to bring Brahms' "A German Requiem" to the stage. Ilia Papandreou will once again appear on stage as Primadonna / Ariadne in Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos" at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg on Sunday. At the MET in New York, Wagner's "Siegfried" with Gerhard Siegel will be performed on Saturday.


The application deadline for the International Singing Competition of the Munot Opernspiele ends on Monday. Until April 10, you sill have the opportunity to apply for the International Piano Competition Concours Clara Haskil. Applicants for the Bodensee-Musikwettbewerb in the category piano should hurry: The deadline is already on April 15.
